Saratoga Springs is hosting six ‘Win and You’re In’ qualifiers, which offer owners and trainers the opportunity to secure their horse’s spot in the lucrative Breeders’ Cup. These races include the Whitney and Jockey Club Gold Cup, both offering $1 million purses at 1 1/4 miles on the Spa’s main track.
The winners of these races will earn an automatic invitation to compete in the prestigious $6 million, Grade I Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita. Thoroughbred milers who prefer turf will have the chance to run in the $500,000, Grade I Fourstardave, with the winner receiving a free entry to the $2 million, Grade I Breeders’ Cup Turf Mile.
Other qualifiers include the $500,000, Grade I Ballerina for fillies and mares, which grants the winner a spot in the $1 million, Grade I Filly and Mare Sprint. The $750,000, Grade I Sword Dancer on the turf promises a ticket to the $4 million, Grade I Breeders’ Cup Turf. Fillies and mares have a chance to qualify for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf and its $2 million purse by winning the $500,000 Flower Bowl.
These ‘Win and You’re In’ qualifiers are exempt from nomination and starting fees, and owners also receive a travel allowance. In addition to the Breeders’ Cup qualifiers, the day saw Get Spooled, a New York-bred son of Hard Spun, win his debut race. Multiple claims were made in the second race, with four horses changing owners and trainers.
Prominent trainer Chad Brown is entering 10 horses in eight races on Saturday in an attempt to claim his sixth Saratoga training championship.
