Why Ryanair Won’t Fly to the US: Insights from CEO Eddie Wilson
As Covid restrictions ease and travel to the US becomes more accessible, the idea of cheap long-haul flights with Ryanair may seem like a dream come true. However, according to CEO Eddie Wilson, there are several reasons why the airline has not yet taken the leap across the Atlantic.
Despite recently ordering 300 new Boeing 737 Max 10 aircraft for its European network, Ryanair has no plans for North American operations. Wilson explains that the airline’s ability to achieve quick turnarounds and access uncongested airports in Europe is crucial to their low-cost model. However, on transatlantic routes, even major carriers struggle to fit in an extra flight due to various factors such as distance, changeover times, and weather delays.
Another challenge is the limited availability of slots at major airports. Securing presence on these routes would be difficult, and using secondary airports would not allow for a Business Class cabin. Wilson emphasizes that a significant portion of transatlantic revenue comes from premium seats and cargo, which Ryanair lacks expertise in catering to.
While other airlines have experimented with low-cost transatlantic flights, no one has found a model that replicates the success of short-haul operations. Ryanair’s consistent approach of offering the same service and fares across its entire network has been key to its long-standing success. Wilson attributes their cost advantage to factors such as a strong balance sheet, fuel price hedging, strategic aircraft purchases, and growth deals with secondary airports.
As for the future, it seems that Ryanair will continue to be cautious when it comes to transatlantic flights.
