“One Tree Hill” star Bethany Joy Lenz has shared more details about her time in an undisclosed religious cult.

In a recent interview with Variety, Lenz referred to the cult leader as “sociopathic” and revealed that she experienced “spiritual abuse” while being part of the group for 10 years.

Lenz mentioned that her cult involvement coincided with her role on “One Tree Hill,” and some of her colleagues on the show attempted to help her escape the situation.

Reflecting on their efforts, Lenz said, “They made attempts to save me, which was incredibly touching, but I was stubborn and convinced I was making the right choices.”

Lenz mentioned that she can’t currently share detailed experiences because she’s writing a book about her time in the cult.

However, she did mention that the group used “isolation” tactics to make her distrust those around her, which affected her relationships on the set of “One Tree Hill.”

Although she felt a sense of loneliness, Lenz stated that being on the show ultimately saved her life because it kept her physically away from the cult’s influence in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Furthermore, Lenz expressed shame for following a “sociopathic” leader and compared them to Keith Raniere, the leader of NXIVM. Her involvement in the cult also had negative repercussions on her family and career.
