July 18 (UPI) — A unique sculpture composed of a seagull’s head and a female human body has once again stirred controversy in a Massachusetts town.
Named Seagull Cinderella, this artwork was initially installed along Route 18 in New Bedford back in 2016, which caused some residents to express their discomfort due to its perceived sexual suggestiveness.
In response, the sculpture was temporarily relocated to the artist Donna Dodson’s hometown of Maynard. However, it has recently made its return to New Bedford.
Despite Dodson’s efforts to make alterations and cover the formerly nude figure, the statue has become a target of complaints once again, leading to a petition demanding its removal.
“This year, she is wearing a full daisy bikini and a full skirt,” Dodson explained to WJAR-TV when addressing the modifications she made to the sculpture.
Dodson intended the artwork to symbolize empowerment rather than controversy.
“The idea is simply to imagine Cinderella as an animal or bird, and in this case, a common seagull, with the seagull head placed on a woman’s body,” Dodson clarified.
Dodson mentioned that city officials are in support of the sculpture and have requested that it remain in its current location for the time being.
