Dave Chappelle’s stand-up routine caused controversy on Thursday evening, resulting in a walk-out by certain audience members. Chappelle addressed the Israel-Gaza conflict during his performance at the TD Garden Arena in Boston.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Chappelle condemned the Hamas attacks on October 7th and criticized Israel’s bombing of Gaza.
The article states that Chappelle also accused the US of aiding the killing of innocent civilians and highlighted ongoing war crimes. He went on to criticize the Israeli government for cutting off supplies to Gaza’s population and blocking humanitarian aid. Chappelle concluded by emphasizing that two wrongs don’t make a right.
Interestingly, the Daily Mail reports that Chappelle’s spokesperson denied his presence in Boston on Thursday evening. However, other audience members have come forward with accounts of what he said.
While one audience member told Chappelle to stop, others cheered and shouted “Free Palestine.” Some audience members walked out of the show and later shared their feelings of discomfort on social media. One individual wrote:
“The audience was cheering Chappelle on during his tirade. I was sick. We were sick. I turned to my friends and wife and said I think it is time to go.
“We walked out and met up with many other Jews leaving the show. Never in my life have I felt so unsafe and so fearful of what I was witnessing.”
