Consumer affairs: Long Overdue Design Makeover for Garden Water Butts

Water-saving plastic water butts have traditionally been unsightly and kept hidden from view. However, with water conservation more crucial than ever, designers have created innovative models that serve as planters, ornaments, and fountains. The market was ripe for a makeover, as people want their gardens to look beautiful, says Gin Tidridge, Product Sustainability Manager at Kingfisher, parent company of B&Q. According to Water UK, the average person uses 142 litres of water daily, and many people underestimate their usage. Last summer’s drought in England led to Sir James Bevan urging people to use water wisely, including installing water butts. A survey by Kingfisher found that 76% of adults polled believe reducing water usage is important. The number one change people have made is installing a water-efficient toilet (31%), followed by installing a water butt (26%), and fitting a low-flow showerhead (18%). Water butts are now available in different shapes, sizes and styles to meet all budgets and preferences. A good water butt setup includes a stand and diverter, which attaches to the downpipe. Water Butts Direct sells models costing under £25 to those costing thousands of pounds, with capacities ranging from 50 litres to 1300 litres. Some are shaped like planters, beehives or wooden barrels. Eye-catching designs include the 300-litre Helena amphora (£356), which a reviewer called “a brilliant addition to any garden,” and the Madison rain barrel, a 185-litre water butt that doubles as a fountain. Although the best time to install a water butt is by March-end or early April, homeowners can still install one during the warm and dry season or after sudden heavy deluges.
