Congresswoman Norma Torres to Participate in Inauguration of Paraguayan President

Representative Norma Torres, a Democrat from Pomona, has been selected by President Joe Biden to be part of a five-member presidential delegation attending the inauguration of Santiago Peña as the new president of Paraguay. The inauguration is scheduled for Tuesday.

Santiago Peña was elected on April 30 and will succeed Mario Abdo Benítez, a member of the National Republican Association-Colorado Party. This party has been in power for almost the entirety of the last seven decades, with a brief interruption from 1947-1962 when it was the only legal party in the country.

It is important to note that the Paraguayan constitution restricts the president to a single five-year term.
