Congressional Charter of Largest US Teachers Union Revoked by GOP Bill Over Alleged ‘Woke’ Agenda

Republican Congressman Bob Good is set to introduce a bill aimed at revoking the federal charter of the National Education Association (NEA), one of the largest labor unions in the United States. Good accuses the NEA of promoting what he calls a “woke agenda” and seeks to strip the organization of its charter granted by Congress in 1906. The NEA, representing the nation’s largest teachers union, has come under fire from conservatives for supporting Critical Race Theory, advocating for school closures during the pandemic, endorsing vaccine mandates, and promoting explicit content in schools. Good argues that the NEA has strayed from its original mission and has become a politically motivated entity focused on advancing a radical progressive agenda. The bill also seeks to revoke the NEA’s property tax exemption.

This move by Good is part of a larger backlash against the NEA, which has faced criticism over the years for its recommended summer reading list for educators, including controversial books like “Gender Queer.” The union also received backlash for a tweet suggesting that educators “know better than anyone” what students need to succeed. Good argues that no union, particularly one that he believes has failed to support students during the pandemic and is pushing left-wing propaganda, should possess a federal charter. The aim of repealing the NEA’s charter is to send a clear message about the commitment to protecting and nurturing young minds in America’s education system. Good emphasizes the importance of providing quality education that prepares students for success, a priority he believes the NEA has deviated from.

The NEA has not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.
