A Miami federal judge has ordered the forfeiture of over $187 million in illicit proceeds from a Medicare fraud scheme, including $30 million in cash, a 2018 Ferrari Spider, and various real estate assets, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. The ruling came in the case of Minal Patel, a lab owner from Atlanta who was sentenced to 27 years in prison in August for his role in filing nearly $500 million in fraudulent claims to Medicare for high-priced cancer genetic tests.
Patel, 44, was found to have conspired with telemedicine companies, call centers, and patient brokers in convincing Medicare beneficiaries to undergo the unnecessary genetic tests conducted at his company, LabSolutions. Telemedicine doctors were found to have indiscriminately prescribed the tests without evaluating or even communicating with the patients. As a result, Medicare had made false payments exceeding $187 million for these fraudulent claims.
As part of the forfeiture, Patel will lose his recently purchased 2018 Ferrari Spider worth nearly $400,000, as well as a Land Rover Range Rover valued at $215,000, as stated in the court documents.
