A portion of Interstate 15 in Lake Elsinore will be named after Deputy Darnell Calhoun, a Riverside County sheriff’s deputy who tragically lost his life in the line of duty. This decision was made through the passing of Senate Resolution 25, introduced by Sen. Kelly Seyarto, R-Murrieta, in the recent legislative session as a way to honor Deputy Calhoun’s memory.
Deputy Darnell Calhoun, only 30 years old, was fatally shot during an ambush in Lakeland Village in January. He served as an outstanding public servant in our community, and it is with great honor and humility that we commemorate his sacrifice to ensure the safety of our district.
The Senate unanimously passed the resolution in August, and it was officially chaptered by the California Office of the Secretary of State earlier this month.
Senator Seyarto expressed, “I had the privilege of personally knowing Deputy Calhoun through his work in our community. He embodied the true spirit of a public servant, and I am proud to honor him in this way, so that his sacrifice is never forgotten.”
A stretch of I-15 between Central Avenue and North Main Street will now be officially known as the “Deputy Darnell Andrew Calhoun Memorial Highway.”
Deputy Calhoun leaves behind his wife, Vanessa, and their young sons, Russell, Troy, and Malcolm. His alleged shooter, 43-year-old Jesse Ceazar Navarro of Lake Elsinore, will potentially face the death penalty if convicted, as announced by the District Attorney’s Office in July.
According to a sheriff’s arrest warrant affidavit, Deputy Calhoun responded to a call about a potential domestic altercation in the 18500 block of Hilldale Lane. Arriving on his own in his patrol vehicle, he approached several individuals in the driveway of the residence.
The document states, “Navarro concealed himself partially behind the open door of his pickup truck, holding a handgun out of sight of Deputy Calhoun. Within 17 seconds of Deputy Calhoun’s arrival, Navarro began shooting at him. Navarro pursued Deputy Calhoun on foot, firing multiple rounds. Deputy Calhoun attempted to defend himself by firing back, but none of his rounds seemed to injure the defendant.”
Deputy Calhoun was struck several times, collapsing in the street. He was rushed to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar; however, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
A backup deputy engaged Navarro in a gunfight just minutes after the distress call, ultimately injuring the suspect. The responding deputy remained unharmed.
Navarro has since recovered from his wounds, and a trial date for his case has yet to be set.
