If Colorado coach Deion Sanders has his way, the entire Boulder population will be sporting sunglasses for the upcoming Rocky Mountain Showdown against Colorado State.
In response to remarks made by Colorado State coach Jay Norvell, Sanders distributed pairs of Prime 21 sunglasses from Blenders to the hosts of “First Take” and “The Pat McAfee Show” to wear on set. He also handed them out to the Colorado players during a team meeting on Thursday.
During his radio show on Wednesday, Norvell took aim at Sanders’ tendency to wear hats and sunglasses during media interviews.
“I had a conversation with ESPN today. And I don’t care if they hear it in Boulder. I told them, ‘I took off my hat, and I took off my glasses.’ And I said, ‘When I converse with adults, I remove my hat and sunglasses.’ That’s what my mother taught me,” Norvell remarked. “They’re never going to appreciate us, no matter what we say or do. It doesn’t matter. So, let’s go up there and play.”
Sanders initially did not appreciate Norvell’s comments, despite them providing additional motivation for Colorado after a strong 2-0 start.
“I wasn’t fond of it because it involved another [Black coach],” Sanders stated. “We were doing fine, right? He was praising me, I was praising him, but then it took an unexpected turn. What happened? Who influenced him? After what he previously said, it caught me off guard, and I started wondering, what happened? Why did he take that route? You know me, you know how I operate. If we really want to talk, I can hold my own. I’m quite skilled at this, but I don’t need to, because the players, they’re prepared.”
Sanders also mentioned that he doesn’t believe in trap games, but the upcoming game against Colorado State, preceding matchups against Oregon and USC, has gained significance due to Norvell’s comments.
“My players are now fired up to the highest level,” Sanders emphasized. “They are eager to compete in this game and they can’t wait for it to begin. We’re ready to go.”
