A number of live shows featuring YouTube star Colleen Ballinger have been canceled following allegations of inappropriate conduct with minors and other misconduct online. Additionally, Ballinger’s podcast partner Trisha Paytas announced they would no longer be working together, effectively ending their podcast “Oversharing” after only three episodes.
Ballinger, known for her comedic videos as the character “Miranda Sings,” posted an apology video in response to fans bringing up past accusations of inappropriate relationships with minors. These allegations included sending underwear to a teenager in 2016 and sexualizing minors during live shows.
In her apology video, Ballinger, 36, plays the ukulele, a choice that received criticism from fans as being insensitive. While she acknowledged making mistakes, she asserted that these rumors are part of a “toxic gossip train” and claimed that her behavior has since changed.
Days later, an old video resurfaced showing Ballinger dancing to Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” in what appeared to be blackface. The video is still available on Ballinger’s YouTube page for her character Miranda Sings, a portrayal that some have criticized as mocking people with disabilities.
Trisha Paytas, a fellow YouTuber and podcast co-host, announced in a YouTube video that she and Ballinger would no longer be working on their podcast together. Paytas shared that she has personally experienced inappropriate relationships as a minor and found the accusations against Ballinger to be triggering. She expressed shock and embarrassment at having to end the podcast after just three episodes.
In recent years, Ballinger has shifted to vlog-style videos on her personal YouTube channel, which has over 3 million subscribers. Her Miranda Sings channel remains popular with 10.7 million subscribers and she continues to perform live as the character.
While some show dates still have available tickets, certain venues have canceled or removed Ballinger’s performances from their calendars. For example, the Sheldon Concert Hall in Saint Louis posted the cancellation of the “Miranda Sings” show scheduled for Aug. 10. The Kiewit Concert Hall at Holland Performing Arts Center in Omaha, Nebraska no longer lists the Aug. 12 event. The Kitty Carlisle Hart Theater in Albany, New York also removed Ballinger’s scheduled performance on Oct. 6 from their site. The Carolina Theater in Durham, North Carolina no longer lists her performance at Fletcher Hall, originally scheduled for Sept. 8. It is unclear if these cancellations are related to the allegations.
CBS News has reached out to a representative for Ballinger for comment and is awaiting a response.
Adam McIntyre, who previously accused Ballinger of sending him underwear, recently spoke to the Huffington Post and also claimed that Ballinger said inappropriate things to him online when he was a teenager. McIntyre alleged that Ballinger manipulated a group of teens in a group chat and vented to them about her divorce. Ballinger addressed the underwear incident and other criticisms in 2020, but these controversies were resurfaced by McIntyre and other TikTok users.
Additionally, another TikTok user accused Ballinger of making her feel “sexually violated” when she was called up on stage during one of her live shows at the age of 14.
