Colleagues Express Concern as McConnell Freezes During News Conference

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell experienced a momentary freeze during his opening remarks at the weekly Senate Republican press conference on Wednesday. This unexpected pause raised concerns among his colleagues. Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso, who is also a physician, quietly approached McConnell and assisted him away from the podium. McConnell later returned to answer questions, but not before causing some worry. According to a McConnell aide, he had felt lightheaded and needed to step away momentarily.

During the conference, McConnell was discussing the Senate’s progress on the National Defense Authorization Act when he suddenly stopped speaking. Barrasso, noticing the issue, asked if McConnell was okay and offered to assist him back to his office. As Barrasso helped McConnell, Sen. John Thune took over the press conference.

After a brief absence, McConnell returned to the podium and was asked about the incident by reporters. They inquired if it was related to his previous injury earlier in the year when he suffered a concussion from a fall. McConnell simply responded, “I’m fine.”

Barrasso, concerned for McConnell’s well-being, checked on him in his office but believes McConnell is in good health since he returned and answered questions. Barrasso, however, clarified that he is not McConnell’s personal physician. He assured reporters that McConnell performed well during the conference.

Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley expressed his curiosity about what happened at the press conference and wants to understand the details. Nonetheless, McConnell’s fellow Senate Republicans expressed their support for him to remain the GOP leader.

Despite his health incident, McConnell, a survivor of polio, has been serving in the Senate since 1985.
