Stephen Flynn, the SNP’s leader in Westminster, has strongly refuted claims that the party’s new plan for achieving Scottish independence is “delusional”.
The SNP has committed to initiating immediate discussions with Westminster if it secures a majority of seats in Scotland in the next general election. This move aims to “give democratic effect to Scotland becoming an independent country”.
During an interview on BBC Newsnight, Mr Flynn was reminded that the SNP could potentially win a majority of seats (at least 29 out of 57) while receiving significantly less than 50% of the vote. In light of this, it was suggested that the party’s plan might be deemed “delusional”. However, Mr Flynn dismissed this notion, stating, “Absolutely not. Our goal is to give voice to the democratic aspirations of the Scottish people.
“If we emerge victorious in the election and secure a majority of seats, we will request an independence referendum from the UK parliament.
“Undoubtedly, Keir Starmer, the likely new prime minister, will reject this request. Therefore, during our conference, we have expanded our proposal by suggesting that we transfer the power to Holyrood.
“In addition, we are proposing that key powers related to energy, migration, and the single market be given to Holyrood. This way, we can effectively address the cost of living crisis in Scotland and protect our citizens.”
