“I saw what looked like a raccoon body with a possum head,” recounted witness Janet Golden to KTEN-TV. “It had a big, long white face with tiny black eyes.”
Animal control officer Darren Beckham believes that there could be up to three of these animals roaming around the city. Traps are being set up in an effort to safely capture them.
“I’m not entirely sure where they will be relocated, but I assume it will be to Mexico or South America,” said Beckham.
It is suspected that these coatimundis were brought to the area through the exotic pet trade.
Officials have warned that coatimundis, also known as coatis, can be a threat to pets such as cats and small dogs.
“Similar to raccoons, they may appear tame or friendly, but they can be unpredictable and potentially harmful to humans, as well as deadly to small pets,” cautioned the Durant Animal Shelter in a Facebook post.
