Coast Guard Intercepts Suspected Illegal Charter Boat at Marina del Rey

Officials reported on Saturday that the U.S. Coast Guard and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department intercepted a 37-foot pleasure craft in Marina del Rey. The vessel, named SAIL LA VIE, was found to be operating illegally, carrying 20 passengers without the necessary permits.

The violations included the absence of a valid Certificate of Inspection, operating in coastwise trade without the appropriate Certificate of Documentation endorsement, and failure to implement a random drug program.

As a result, the Coast Guard issued a Captain of the Port Order to halt all operations of the SAIL LA VIE until the violations were rectified.

The Coast Guard emphasized that illegal charters pose serious safety risks to the public. It is mandatory for any captain operating a vessel with paying passengers to possess a Coast Guard license and meet all safety requirements.

The agency urged passengers to request to see the captain’s Merchant Mariner Credential for verification.

Violators of the law can face civil penalties amounting to tens of thousands of dollars. Additionally, violating a Captain of the Port Order is considered a felony, punishable by up to six years in prison and a maximum fine of $500,000 for organizations.
