The Coachella Valley Repertory has announced the appointment of Howard Shangraw, a highly experienced actor, director, playwright, and arts administrator, as the new director of its Conservatory. Shangraw’s impressive directing resume includes a wide range of classical and contemporary repertoire as well as musical productions for professional and community theaters, colleges, and high schools, according to CVRep officials.
In addition to directing, Shangraw has also excelled as a playwright, composer, actor, and theater workshop teacher for school educators. He previously held positions as an artistic director at the Hi-Desert Cultural Center, directed for the Theatre Mediterranean in Barcelona, Spain, and served as the theater department chair at the Idyllwild Arts Academy.
Shangraw will officially assume his role on June 19, coinciding with the start of the summer conservatory classes at the Coachella Valley Repertory. He will personally teach three of the classes during this period, including “Acting Pro: Mastering the Audition” for high school juniors and seniors, “Movement For Actors: Athletes of Emotion” for grades 9 to 12, and “Going Solo: The Art of The One-Person Show” for individuals aged 18 and above, as confirmed by theater officials. Enrollment fees for his classes range from $195 onwards and classes will be held on various dates and times between July 11 and August 29.
In addition to Shangraw’s classes, the summer session curriculum at the Coachella Valley Repertory Conservatory will offer advanced level classes, master classes, and theater programs taught by industry professionals. These include “Acting Technique,” “The I hate Shakespeare Shakespeare Workshop,” “Empowered Improv,” “Improve Essentials,” and “Improv FUN-damentals.” Enrollment is open to students as young as 8 years old.
