CNN Implements New Programming Lineup in an Effort to Boost Ratings

CNN, facing the challenge of declining ratings, has now unveiled an exciting transformation of its morning and evening programming. The network’s 10 p.m. hour on weekdays will now be anchored by Abby Phillip, a highly regarded senior political correspondent and the anchor of “Inside Politics Sunday.” Laura Coates, a prominent anchor and chief legal analyst at CNN, will take the reins for the network’s 11 p.m. hour.

The prime-time lineup at CNN has been going through changes following the dismissal of their star anchor, Chris Cuomo, due to his alleged involvement in aiding his brother, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. In response, CNN named Kaitlan Collins, their former White House correspondent, as the anchor for the 9 p.m. hour. Don Lemon, who previously held a prime-time anchor position and departed from the network after a tumultuous tenure as co-host of the revamped morning show, left another void to be filled.

CNN’s morning show, which had been co-hosted by Collins, Lemon, and Poppy Harlow, will also undergo a makeover. Moving forward, Harlow and Phil Mattingly, CNN’s chief White House correspondent, will take on the co-hosting responsibilities. Additionally, “Early Start,” a program that airs earlier in the morning, will be anchored by Kasie Hunt, CNN’s chief national affairs analyst, who formerly hosted the morning show “Way Too Early” on MSNBC.

Most of CNN’s afternoon programming will remain unchanged, with Pam Brown, the network’s chief investigative correspondent, continuing to anchor the 3 p.m. hour.

These changes are reflective of CNN’s commitment to enhancing the diversity of its on-air talent. While the addition of Abby Phillip and Laura Coates adds two Black journalists to the evening lineup, the absence of Don Lemon in the morning means that the network’s flagship morning program will lack a journalist of color. However, CNN has made efforts to promote journalists of color in other time slots, with Victor Blackwell taking the helm of the 8 a.m. hour on Saturdays and Manu Raju being promoted to anchor “Inside Politics.”

CNN has faced difficulties in improving its ratings this year, particularly due to the turbulent leadership and eventual departure of Chris Licht, the network’s former chairman and chief executive. As of now, CNN is trailing behind its longtime ratings leader, Fox News, and its rival MSNBC in total viewership.

Moreover, CNN is also revamping its weekend lineup. Chris Wallace, previously known for hosting “Fox News Sunday” and now part of CNN following the launch of the ill-fated CNN+ streaming service, will anchor the network’s 10 a.m. hour on Saturdays. Christiane Amanpour, CNN’s chief international correspondent, will take the reins for the 11 a.m. hour. On Saturday mornings, Victor Blackwell will anchor CNN’s 8 a.m. hour, followed by Michael Smerconish at 9 a.m.
