Close Call on Colorado Highway: Meet the Courageous Hero Cops Who Risked Everything

Coach Deion Sanders, former NFL star, has become a legend in college football for his incredible turnaround of the University of Colorado team. While he deserves all the praise he’s receiving, I would also like to acknowledge two other local heroes – the law enforcement officers from the Boulder Police Department.

We all know that police officers run towards danger, not away from it. However, during a recent trip to Boulder, I discovered that they are just as fearless when it comes to running towards silence. This proved to be a dangerous situation when the silence was caused by a glitchy hybrid engine on a busy highway.

Last month, my wife Devin and I took our daughter Hope to the University of Colorado for her freshman year. After landing at Denver International Airport, we rented a minivan from a nearby Target and packed it with all the dorm room essentials before heading to campus.

Our rental minivan had a mind of its own and decided to shut down the hybrid engine while we were cruising on the expressway. It was as unexpected as a student changing their major. We were left in a dangerous situation, rapidly losing speed.

A bit of internet research led me to believe that the minivan we rented may have had a faulty transmission wiring connector, which caused the sudden engine shutdown. It was the only explanation for why we were speeding towards Boulder one moment and then stranded on the shoulder of the highway the next.

This was a terrifying experience, especially considering that we were in a brand-new rental vehicle. Somehow, we managed to navigate through traffic and reach the shoulder of an exit ramp, but we were still not completely safe.

That’s when two Boulder police officers arrived in response to our distress call. Despite our shock and fear, they immediately took action. They positioned their vehicle and themselves between my family and the oncoming traffic, ensuring our safety until roadside assistance arrived.

Putting first their vehicle and then their bodies between my family and oncoming traffic, they moved us to safety and directed drivers until roadside assistance arrived.

These officers were true professionals, quietly going about their duties. When I expressed my gratitude and asked for their business cards, they initially hesitated, simply stating that they were doing their job.

The officers finally relented when I assured them that I just wanted to express my gratitude once I was back home in Charlotte.

I’m sharing this story now, hoping that more people will read this note of appreciation. So, I extend my heartfelt thanks to Officers Williams and Starks of the Boulder Police Department for their dedicated service and protection.

While you may believe you were just doing your jobs, it takes a special kind of courage to do what you do. As John Wayne once said, courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway. Every day, you bravely saddle up and selflessly protect the lives of people in your community and beyond. You are truly good men.

I hope that one day, we’ll have the chance to meet again in Boulder, perhaps on a college football game day. However, the next time I rent a vehicle, I think I’ll check if there are any old pickup trucks available.
