A former school dance teacher in Cleveland has been sentenced to life in prison for the rape of six teenage students and sexual abuse of two others. Terence Greene, 57, a renowned teacher who mentored numerous young dancers, including those who performed on Broadway, was found guilty of kidnapping and felonious assault in addition to the sexual abuse charges. In his defense, Greene protested his innocence, claiming that half of the victims were not even his students. He expressed disbelief at the accusations against him and questioned what comes next in his life, leaving it in the hands of God. His attorney, W. Scott Ramsey, plans to appeal the verdict.
Prosecutors revealed that Greene began sexually abusing a 14-year-old boy shortly after joining the Cleveland Metropolitan School District in the 1990s. The abuse continued over the years, with a total of eight victims, aged 14 to 17, coming forward. Despite facing sexual battery charges in 2004, of which he was found not guilty, Greene returned to teaching. The recent lawsuit filed by eight former students accused the school of neglecting to investigate previous claims of sexual abuse against Greene. As a result, the Cleveland public school district agreed to pay a $3.25 million settlement in 2021. The lawsuit also mentioned that the school allowed Greene to share hotel rooms with students during sanctioned trips. Following his resignation in 2014, Greene began teaching at the dance academy for children at Cuyahoga Community College, who claims no knowledge of his prior history of abuse.
It is a tragic case that highlights the importance of thorough background checks and the need to prioritize the safety and well-being of students. The sentencing of Greene sends a clear message that such reprehensible acts will not go unpunished in our society.
