Claude 2 AI Chatbot Now Available to Public Through Anthropi,c an OpenAI Competitor

Dario Amodei, co-founder of Anthropic, arrived at the White House for a meeting on artificial intelligence with Vice President Kamala Harris. This meeting marked the entry of Anthropic into the AI arms race. While OpenAI and Google are competing to develop advanced chatbots powered by generative AI, Anthropic is investing heavily to stay competitive. After raising $750 million in funding, Anthropic is now introducing its new AI chatbot, Claude 2.

Anthropic, founded in 2021 by former OpenAI research executives and backed by companies like Google, Salesforce, and Zoom, is opening up its chatbot technology to consumers for the first time. Over the past two months, Anthropic’s AI models have been tested by businesses like Slack, Notion, and Quora, accumulating a waitlist of over 350,000 people eager to access Claude 2.

Claude 2 will initially be available to users in the U.S. and U.K., with plans for expansion in the future. This move comes after OpenAI introduced ChatGPT, which sparked significant interest and investment in generative AI chatbots. Despite concerns about bias propagation, the technology has already found its way into various industries.

Anthropic’s ambitions with Claude 2 are significant. The company claims that the chatbot can summarize up to 75,000 words, equivalent to a book length. Users can input large data sets and request summaries in the form of memos, letters, or stories. In comparison, ChatGPT can handle only around 3,000 words.

Daniela Amodei, co-founder of Anthropic, emphasized that the market for large language models is rapidly expanding, providing ample opportunities for multiple players to succeed. However, challenges remain, including the issue of incorrect answers, referred to as “hallucinations,” that AI chatbots occasionally produce.

Despite these challenges, Anthropic’s Claude 2 has shown improvements over its predecessor, with better performance on tests like the Bar exam’s multiple-choice section and a Python coding test. The upgraded chatbot is also more skilled at providing harmless responses, indicating enhanced safety.

Even though there are unknown challenges ahead, Amodei remains optimistic about the potential of AI language models, including Claude 2. The future looks promising, but the industry must continue to address safety concerns and improve upon existing technologies.

In May, Anthropic was invited to a White House meeting alongside Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI to discuss responsible AI development with Vice President Kamala Harris. This recognition further solidifies Anthropic’s position in the AI landscape. With continued advancements and investments, the potential of AI chatbots like Claude 2 to revolutionize various industries remains high.
