Attorneys representing one of the two girls who claim to have been sexually abused by a former Hollywood studio architect, renowned for his designs of movie theaters and sound studios, are seeking pretrial discovery of his financial condition. The lawsuit, filed in Van Nuys Superior Court, names Jeffrey Cooper and the Calabasas Shul, which Cooper helped establish in 1994, as defendants. The plaintiffs go by the names Jane Doe 1 and Jane Doe 2.
The lawsuit was filed on July 25th, the same day Cooper was sentenced to eight years in state prison by Judge Alan Schneider. Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender.
Cooper, aged 71, was convicted in May 2022 on three felony counts of lewd acts on a child involving Jane Doe 1. The abuse took place between 2005 and 2007, when Jane Doe 1 was between the ages of 12 and 13, at Cooper’s residence. She later reported the incidents to the authorities, as confirmed by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
The jury couldn’t reach a verdict on charges pertaining to a second girl, who was 6 years old when Cooper allegedly began grooming her.
Based on Cooper’s criminal conviction, his liability for Jane Doe 1’s claims of sexual assault and battery is established, entitling her to seek punitive damages from the architect and obtain information about his personal wealth, according to court papers filed by the plaintiffs’ attorneys on June 22nd.
A hearing for the motion is scheduled for July 25th before Judge Huey Cotton. On October 26th, the defense will present a motion to put the civil case on hold until the outcome of Cooper’s criminal case appeal. The plaintiffs’ attorneys oppose the stay.
During his testimony in the criminal case, Cooper vehemently denied the allegations, stating that there were always multiple adults present, including the girls’ parents and one girl’s grandparents, who were close friends of the Coopers.
