Cillian Murphy Opens Up About the ‘Awkward’ Aspect of Sex Scenes in His Profession

  • According to Cillian Murphy, the sex scenes in “Oppenheimer” are crucial to the film.
  • Although he acknowledges that sex scenes aren’t enjoyable to film.
  • “Listen, no one likes doing them, they’re the most awkward possible part of our job,” he explained.

Cillian Murphy, the star of “Oppenheimer,” is defending the inclusion of sex scenes in the biopic about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb.

At first glance, it may seem unnecessary to include sex scenes when portraying the life and work of such a renowned physicist responsible for creating one of the deadliest weapons in history.

However, it turns out that Oppenheimer had multiple affairs, including one with a Communist named Jean Tatlock, while married to his wife Kitty (played by Emily Blunt) in real life.

“I think they were vital in this,” Murphy told British GQ. “I believe that the relationship he had with Jean Tatlock is one of the most emotionally significant aspects of the film. If it is crucial to the story, then it is worth including.”

“Listen, no one likes doing them, they’re the most awkward possible part of our job,” Murphy continued. “But sometimes you have to get on with it.”

Nolan had a similar response when discussing his decision to include sex scenes in the film. It is the first time he has filmed sexually explicit content in his career.

“When you consider Oppenheimer’s life and story, his sexuality, his charisma with women, and his intense relationship with Jean Tatlock, played by Florence Pugh, are essential elements,” he explained. “Their relationship, especially considering Tatlock’s Communist beliefs, had significant consequences for Oppenheimer’s life and fate.”

A decade after the successful atomic bomb test and its devastating impact on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Oppenheimer’s security clearance was revoked due to allegations of Communist ties during a 1954 security hearing.

“It was crucial to understand their relationship and delve deep into it, fully grasping its significance to Oppenheimer,” Nolan stated regarding Oppenheimer’s relationship with Tatlock. “We didn’t want to be coy or elusive; we aimed to be intimate and truly comprehend the importance of this relationship to him.”

Reactions to the sex and nudity in the film vary among audiences worldwide.

In India, a scene showing Oppenheimer reading from the Bhagavad Gita, a holy Hindu text, while having sex with Tatlock has sparked outrage. The Information Commissioner of India has condemned the scene, considering it a disrespectful portrayal of Hinduism.

Some international versions have used CGI to cover Florence Pugh’s nudity with a black slip dress.

“Oppenheimer” is currently screening in theaters.
