Consultants have forecasted a 13% increase in transatlantic passenger traffic at Dublin Airport, leading to the urgent need for expansion of the customs pre-clearance and border protection (CBP) facility. Planning documents submitted by the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) emphasize the chronic congestion experienced by the existing CBP facility and its imminent requirement for enlargement. Coakley O’Neill, the planning consultants for the DAA, have informed Fingal County Council that the overflow queuing system of the CBP needs to be implemented for five out of every seven days during the summer of 2022. This system is projected to see even more use during the upcoming summer, causing operational difficulties for multiple areas within the airport.
Coakley O’Neill further explains that the overcrowded queuing system is inefficient and confusing for passengers who frequently become anxious about timely security checks. The overflow queuing system’s technical and logistical complexity affects various parts of pier 4, including arrival and departure gates for non-US destinations, as well as the link between pier 4 and Terminal 2. With an estimated 1.7 million passengers projected to use the CBP facility in 2023, a 13% increase from the previous year, it is clear that the current infrastructure is insufficient.
To address these challenges, DAA CEO has introduced the innovative C3 Technology, aiming to revolutionize airport security and enhance passenger experience. The proposed expansion of the CBP facility, as outlined in the planning report, is essential for ensuring the efficient, comfortable, and safe operation of the CBP at Dublin Airport. The anticipated benefits of this expansion include improved passenger experience and staff well-being.
Dublin and Shannon airports currently have an advantage over other airports operating US flight services due to their CBP facilities. Pre-clearance allows US-bound passengers to complete all immigration, customs, and agriculture inspections prior to departure, enabling them to be treated as domestic arrivals in the US and bypass lengthy immigration queues upon arrival.
