According to Dr. Marino, it is highly unlikely that Pratt actually drank such excessive amounts of water, as doing so can lead to water poisoning, which is extremely dangerous.

Water poisoning, also known as water intoxication or hyperhydration, can result in symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and confusion, although it is rare in healthy individuals.

In extreme cases, water poisoning can be fatal. The rapid intake of excessive water can disrupt the body’s electrolyte balance, particularly sodium, leading to headaches, disorientation, muscle cramps, seizures, and even brain damage or coma.

Understanding the Appropriate Water Intake

According to research, the human body can process approximately one quart (32 ounces) of water per hour, or 20 to 28 quarts per day, thanks to the kidneys.

Case reports suggest that water intoxication can occur after consuming two to four quarts of water within an hour or less, or more than five liters in a few hours.

While some individuals with high activity levels or high-protein diets may benefit from consuming more water, it is important to note that the appropriate amount of water to drink varies based on individual factors such as activity level.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recommend a daily intake of 125 ounces for men and 91 ounces for women.
