Chloe Kelly and Alex Greenwood immediately went over to console Nigeria goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie in the aftermath of England’s 4-2 penalty shootout victory in the last-16 of the World Cup.
After a tense encounter in which the Lionesses were not at their best, they held their nerve on penalty kicks to progress to the quarter-finals where they will face either Colombia or Jamaica.
Kelly smashed in the winning penalty with an impressive spot kick into the top left corner, and she went over to check on Nnadozie, who was on the floor in tears, along with her teammate Greenwood.
They lifted Nnadozie up off the floor, displaying great sportsmanship. Despite being ranked 40th in the world, Nigeria performed better than England throughout the 120 minutes of the match.

However, Nigeria can be proud of their tournament performance as they secured a memorable win against Australia and remained unbeaten in normal time across their four games.
England faced challenges when Lauren James was sent off for violent conduct, and Lucy Bronze was involved in a potential penalty incident. Yet, the Lionesses managed to stay in the tournament.
After Georgia Stanway missed England’s first penalty, Beth England, Rachel Daly, and Alex Greenwood successfully converted their spot kicks.
Kelly, who became a national hero after her match-winning goal in last summer’s Euro 2022 final, confidently scored the winning penalty. Nigeria’s Desire Oparanozie and Michelle Alozie missed their attempts, resulting in missed opportunities for their team.
