July 4 (UPI) — China’s trade conflict with democratic nations escalates as it imposes export controls on gallium and germanium, crucial metals used in semiconductor manufacturing.

In a step to “safeguard national security and interests,” China’s commerce ministry announced the implementation of export restrictions on Monday. The new regulations require exporters to obtain a license to ship these metals and their related products starting from August 1. The application process will also require the identification of the end use and end user.

“For the export of items listed in this announcement that have a major impact on national security, the Ministry of Commerce, together with relevant departments, shall report to the State Council for approval,” stated the ministry in a statement.

This move by China follows the chip export controls imposed by the Biden administration in October, alleging that Beijing is utilizing semiconductor technology for military advancement and increasing surveillance on citizens.

Despite Beijing’s condemnation, allies such as Japan and the Netherlands have joined this effort. In late May, China banned companies within the critical information security sector from purchasing products made by US manufacturer Micron Technology, citing security concerns.

Recently, the Netherlands also enacted trade restrictions, prohibiting the export of Dutch-made semiconductors and other high technology items to China.

This announcement coincides with US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s upcoming visit to China for discussions on both countries’ economies. The meetings are scheduled to take place from Thursday to Sunday.
