Cherished Family Retreats: Readers’ Preferred Holiday Destinations for Chats, Countryside, Laughter, and Love

Italy Last year, my family and I decided to rent a charming property near Lake Garda. It was situated in a picturesque hamlet with two fabulous Italian restaurants and a well-stocked shop. We embarked on a road trip from Lincolnshire with our two beloved dogs in our trusty motorhome. Upon arrival, our three adult children and their partners joined us for a relaxing vacation. The property owner went above and beyond by organizing a pasta cooking day where we indulged in local wine, meat, and cheeses. We found ourselves never wanting to leave the villa as the time spent talking and playing games with each other was simply priceless. This holiday proved to be our best yet, as the leisurely pace and quality family time allowed us to truly unwind and enjoy each other’s company. – Cath Delsignore

A Magical Weekend in the Wye Valley: We had the pleasure of spending a remarkable weekend in the breathtaking Wye Valley. Three generations of our family, a total of 21 of us, gathered at a charming old eight-bedroom period house that seemed frozen in time since the 70s. The house’s shabby chic aesthetic, complete with mismatched furniture, cultivated a relaxed and carefree atmosphere. We relished in sprawling on the sofas, playing Bananagrams around the grand dining room table, and dining al fresco amidst lush green fields, woodland, and the occasional grazing sheep. Exploring the nearby Forest of Dean and hiking to stunning viewpoints from the garden made this weekend getaway even more unforgettable. It was a perfect blend of laughter, love, and country charm. – Ruth E Green

Four Generations Unite in Vienna: Our extensive family, scattered across Europe and the UK, comes together every couple of years for a large family reunion in May. Throughout the years, we have visited various destinations such as Bonn, Hamburg, Berlin, Brighton, and Frankfurt, but Vienna holds a special place in our hearts. Arriving a day early, we had the opportunity to marvel at the grandeur of Schönbrunn Palace together. Throughout our stay, we strolled through the Prater, rode historic trams through the old city, and indulged in a delightful garden party. To top it off, we even had a restaurant exclusively for our family dinner. This magical weekend brought together four generations and over 60 individuals, strengthening the bond and creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime. – Susanna C

We were delighted to discover the comfortable Scandi cabins, which were not only brilliant but also conveniently located near play parks. What set Lalandia apart was the option to purchase a gold wristband in advance, granting unlimited access to an array of exciting activities such as high ropes, climbing, trampolines, bowling, mini-golf, and even indoor skiing. Accessible via the train line connecting Barcelona and Tarragona, both of which offer exciting day trip opportunities, Calafell proved to be the perfect seaside retreat. The town was brimming with inviting cafes, bars, and restaurants, offering the chance for us and our children to practice our Spanish skills. The long sandy beach was meticulously maintained, boasting plenty of showers and changing rooms. Northern Ireland’s Coastal Beauty: The walk along the East Strand from Portrush to the White Rocks is a truly magnificent experience. This route also serves as the location for a weekly park run, which is perhaps one of the most picturesque in the UK. As you embark on the walk, you are treated to a view of the Skerries, a stunning rock formation. On a clear day, you can even spot County Donegal to the left and Islay and Jura to the right. Keep an eye out for porpoises and dolphins if the sea is calm. At the White Rocks, there are ample opportunities for swimming, bodyboarding, or simply enjoying a picnic.
