Cheers to La Nauve: Embrace the Class of Cognac’s Luxurious New Hideaway

What’s the buzz? Olivia Grégoire, France’s minister for tourism, recently launched a €1 million campaign to promote year-round off-the-beaten track tourism. With its renowned distilleries, medieval gates, historic castle, and charming streets, Cognac is an ideal destination worth exploring. And now, visitors have the opportunity to stay in a stunning hotel, La Nauve, located on the outskirts of town. La Nauve is the second property from the Almae Collection and offers a unique experience that honors art, design, gastronomy, and community.

Situated approximately an hour from the Atlantic coast, La Nauve is a convenient location for travelers. It’s located 106km southeast of La Rochelle airport, 128km north of Bordeaux, and 48km west of Angoulême, a city that offers direct rail connections to Paris and was featured in Wes Anderson’s film, The French Dispatch.

The main house, constructed in the 1870s, has undergone extensive remodeling. While maintaining its ornate façade, the interior has been completely redesigned with exposed oak trusses and a modern aesthetic. The hotel features 12 luxurious bedrooms, including four in the adjacent Le Petit Chai. The rooms are tastefully decorated with high-quality materials, such as end-grain oak floors and marquetry inlaid doors and bedheads inspired by a sequoia tree on the property.

La Nauve offers several activities for guests to enjoy during their stay. They can embark on a boat ride along the picturesque Charente River, explore central Cognac by foot or bicycle, or partake in distillery tours and tastings. While Maison Hennessy is a popular option, La Nauve recommends smaller independent distilleries like Delamain and Hardy, where guests can receive a more personalized and intimate experience.

Food enthusiasts will be delighted by the hotel’s restaurants. Notes, the gourmet restaurant located in the main house, offers a unique dining experience with no menu options. Instead, guests can choose between four or seven courses, allowing Chef Anthony Carballo to showcase his inventive and flavorful creations. The Brasserie des Flâneurs in the former distillery offers a simpler menu with dishes like seared tuna, sirloin with béarnaise sauce, and chicken cordon bleu.

Rates at La Nauve start at €294 per night for a double room, with breakfast included. It’s the perfect destination for those seeking luxury, tranquility, and beauty, as famously described by Charles Baudelaire in his poem, L’Invitation au voyage.
