Cheerleader Shares Her Account Following the Shooting Incident in Elgin, Texas

Payton Washington, a cheerleader from Texas who was shot by a stranger after her friend accidentally opened the door of the wrong car, recently spoke on Good Morning America about the incident. Despite sustaining three gunshot wounds, including one in her back and two in her right buttock, Washington tried to remain calm during the ordeal. Her teammate, Heather Roth, had opened the door of a vehicle she thought was hers, but upon realizing there was a stranger in the passenger seat, quickly apologized and left. The stranger, identified by police as Pedro Tello Rodriguez Jr., approached them and began shooting at the cheerleaders. Although Washington initially didn’t think the situation was severe, she soon realized she had been shot when she saw blood on her seat. She was eventually hospitalized for three weeks. Rodriguez has been charged with deadly conduct, a third-degree felony, and while his attorney claims that he believed he was about to be robbed, Rodriguez has yet to enter a plea. Washington’s physical recovery has been difficult, and she has needed a lot of assistance, but she was recently able to make it to her high school graduation.
