Cellular devices and digital screens are hindering your child’s sleep

New research has shown that children and teenagers are losing sleep time and quality as a result of using cell phones, tablets, and computers late at night. The study, published in JAMA Pediatrics, shows that even those who don’t use their devices at night are still suffering from interrupted sleep and daytime sleepiness. The report finds “a consistent pattern of effect across a wide range of countries and settings,” says Dr. Ben Carter, lead author and a senior lecturer in biostatistics at King’s College London. The research discovered that children who did not use their devices in their bedrooms still had their sleep interrupted and were likely to suffer from similar problems. Lights and sounds emitted by technology, as well as content itself, may be too stimulating and interfere with sleep patterns. In addition, light emitted from devices can affect the circadian rhythm, which includes body temperature and hormone release, resulting in less sleep and less quality sleep. Creating a dark, comfortable and peaceful sleep environment is crucial for restful sleep, and the National Sleep Foundation recommends 30 minutes of “gadget-free transition time” before bedtime.
