Celebration of LGBTQ+ Pride Month marked by Biden

President Joe Biden hosted the largest White House Pride event to date, with the aim of demonstrating support for the LGBTQ+ community during a challenging time. Discriminatory legislation poses a threat to their rights, especially the transgender community. The Human Rights Campaign reported the introduction of at least 525 bills at state level that threaten the community’s rights, with some legislation pushed by Republican governors aspiring to run for president. Recent examples are a Florida law banning doctors from administering gender-affirming medical care to transgender youths, and a North Dakota law that disallows government entities and schools from referring to transgender people by the pronouns they choose. Activists celebrated the event, but recognised the work they still need to do to combat hate and bigotry. One supporter, Anjali Rimi, said the moment would be “cherished for a lifetime” and was a reminder that more work needs to be done.
