A 28-year-old man, who is believed to have committed an armed carjacking in Phoenix and subsequently drove into Blythe, pleaded not guilty to felony charges on Monday.
Lenny Brian Vanhorenbeeck, a resident of Mesa, Arizona, has been charged in Riverside County with several felonies, including receiving a stolen vehicle, possession of a firearm as a convicted felon and narcotic addict, and possession of ammunition. He also faces an additional charge for being armed during the commission of the crime.
During his court appearance at the Larson Justice Center in Indio, Vanhorenbeeck pleaded not guilty to all charges and denied the allegation of being armed. He is scheduled to appear in court again on Tuesday at the Blythe Courthouse.
According to Sgt. Ed Reynoso of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, deputies at the Colorado River sheriff’s station received a tip on August 10th about a stolen car involved in an armed carjacking in Phoenix. The car was reported to be heading towards Blythe, with the suspect considered armed and dangerous.
Deputies spotted the vehicle entering Blythe at 8:05 a.m. on the same day and promptly conducted a stop, leading to the arrest of Vanhorenbeeck, who was allegedly the driver. A shotgun, which was found leaning on the passenger side of the center console, was also recovered from the vehicle.
Vanhorenbeeck was subsequently booked into the John J. Benoit Detention Center in Indio, where he is currently held without bail.
The Colorado River Station personnel are collaborating with the Mesa Police Department and Phoenix Police Department to pursue additional criminal charges in Arizona related to this case, according to Sgt. Ed Reynoso.
