An officer of the U.S. Capitol Police, who played a key role in defending against the violent mob of Donald Trump supporters on January 6, 2021, has expressed his belief that the former president should have been arrested the day after the attack.
In an interview with CBS News on Thursday, Officer Harry Dunn stated, “They should have arrested him on Jan. 7, but I’m not the one doing the investigation. Every day that goes by, the more that is at stake.”
Dunn made these comments shortly after Trump was indicted for the third time, facing four felony charges including conspiracy to defraud the United States and conspiracy against rights. These charges are related to Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election, which he lost to Democrat Joe Biden. Trump has pleaded not guilty.
During the CBS News interview, Dunn emphasized the importance of true accountability and justice, stating, “True accountability and true justice comes in the form of a guilty verdict. So I didn’t expect much here, but this is a necessary step to getting to that ultimate destination that I’ve been tirelessly advocating for.”
On the day of the Capitol attack, Dunn bravely confronted members of the extremist Oath Keepers militia group as they breached the building and attempted to enter House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office.
Dunn provided his testimony about the ordeal during the Oath Keepers trial in October.
According to his testimony, Dunn told the rioters, “I’m not letting you come this way. We have dozens of officers down. They’re taking us out on stretchers. Y’all are causing severe harm to us.”
