Google has allowed its employees located in New York and other East Coast locales to work from home due to hazardous smoke from Canadian wildfires. The tech giant advised its employees to avoid outdoor exposure and remain indoors as much as possible, considering the unhealthy air quality. Google also closed off outdoor terraces at its New York offices and informed its staff that its affected offices have filtration systems to maintain high air quality. However, the company sent out a company-wide notice that strictly enforced onsite attendance policies. Employees received warnings of poor adherence possibly impacting individual performance reviews. Meanwhile, New York City’s air quality has become some of the worst in the world, and Mayor Eric Adams urged residents to stay indoors as much as possible. In light of the severity of the situation, Google’s memo advised its employees located in the Detroit metro area, Pittsburgh, Raleigh-Durham, the Washington, DC, metro area, Toronto, Waterloo, and Reston, Virginia to work from home. It remains unclear as to how long the work-from-home advisory will remain in effect.
