Numerous cities in the Northeastern United States, including New York City, are currently experiencing disruptions to daily life due to hazardous levels of air pollution stemming from hundreds of wildfires in Canada. As the smoke from the wildfires continues to spread, more of the US is being affected, with air quality alerts being triggered from parts of the Great Lakes/Ohio Valley to the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, and even as far south as Alabama and Georgia. Philadelphia currently holds the dubious honor of having the worst air quality in the country. Experts predict that the weather system responsible for carrying the haze to the Northeast will likely persist for the next few days at least. US National Weather Service meteorologist Bryan Ramsey warns that the air quality is likely to remain unhealthy until the wind shifts direction or the fires are contained. Hospitals in New York City have noted an uptick in patients suffering respiratory illnesses, and authorities have urged residents, especially the most vulnerable, to refrain from going outside. The crisis has led to millions of people in both Canada and the US being advised to wear N95 masks when outdoors, and New York State is set to distribute a million masks to citizens. Scientists warn that this disaster is but a harbinger of things to come as climate change progresses. The fires are primarily centered in Quebec, with around 100 out of control. The White House has sent over 600 firefighters and support personnel to aid with containment efforts. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada thanked the US for its support in fighting the fires.
