Canada Dominates: Most Top 10 Liveable Cities in the World Are Claimed by Canada

Canada is leading the pack when it comes to the most liveable cities in the world. In the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) 2023 Global Liveability Index, three Canadian cities have claimed Top 10 honours, which is more than any other country on the list. The top spot was held by Vienna, Austria, thanks to its winning combination of culture, entertainment, reliable infrastructure, stability, and excellent education and health care sectors. However, Australian cities Sydney and Melbourne jumped into the Top 5, pushing Calgary down from its previous ranking of #3. Calgary now sits in seventh place, tied with Zurich, Switzerland, and is nestled between Vancouver (#5) and Toronto (#9). Calgary’s decline can likely be attributed to the EIU’s “return to order” following the COVID-19 pandemic. Australian cities plummeted in the rankings last year due to a highly contagious strain of COVID-19. However, Canada is the only country to have three cities in the Top 10, while Australia and Switzerland were the only other countries to have multiple cities on the list. The overall index reached a 15-year high, thanks to pandemic recovery, with an average score of 76.2 out of 100, up from 73.2 the previous year. Education has shown improvement, with children returning to school and a reduced burden on hospitals and healthcare systems. The EIU evaluated 173 cities based on factors such as stability, health care, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. Access to health care, green spaces, cultural and sports activities, crime rates, and infrastructure were considered in the rankings. The top 10 cities are Vienna, Austria; Copenhagen, Denmark; Melbourne, Australia; Sydney, Australia; Vancouver, Canada; Zurich, Switzerland; Calgary, Canada; Geneva, Switzerland; Toronto, Canada; and Osaka, Japan and Auckland, New Zealand tied for the tenth spot. This year, Asian cities saw significant improvements in liveability scores due to the easing and removal of pandemic restrictions. Conversely, cities in the UK and the US saw declines in stability due to instances of civil unrest, a cost-of-living crisis and increased crime rates. The bottom of the list saw little change, with cities facing civil unrest, war, and conflict ranking as the least liveable. Algerian city Algiers, Libyan city Tripoli, and Syrian city Damascus rounded out the bottom three spots.
