SEATTLE — The Seattle Seahawks’ wide receiver, Cade Johnson, suffered a concussion during the team’s preseason opener at Lumen Field on Thursday night. Johnson was promptly taken off the field on a stretcher and transported to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center for further evaluation.
Head coach Pete Carroll shared that initial tests indicated no additional concerns beyond the concussion. However, it remains uncertain whether Johnson will stay at the hospital overnight.
“We received a positive early report,” Carroll stated. “I hope that it’s conclusive, but that’s the current information we received.”
Carroll also emphasized the team’s commitment to taking maximum precautions, and he expressed optimism regarding the initial findings.
Johnson displayed momentary instability as he rose from a tackle during a 17-yard kickoff return in the second quarter against the Vikings. He managed to walk off the field under his own power but was promptly taken to the medical tent for evaluation.
Following examination, Johnson remained in the tent for the rest of the quarter before being placed on a stretcher, with his neck securely stabilized, and taken off the field during halftime.
Undrafted in 2021 from South Dakota State, Johnson spent portions of his first two seasons on the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad. He notably appeared in three regular-season games last year, tallying two receptions for 21 yards.
Additionally, Seahawks’ receiver Dee Eskridge exited the game in the first half due to a twisted right knee and did not return. However, Eskridge, who violated the league’s personal conduct policy and is facing a six-game suspension, remains eligible to practice and participate in preseason games.
Carroll commented on Eskridge’s knee injury, stating, “It appears to be related to cartilage. We are still assessing the severity. While it doesn’t seem catastrophic and he is able to move around on it, we need to determine the extent of the damage.”
