Cabinet Members Call on Rishi Sunak to Rethink Eco Policies

The Labour Party achieved a remarkable victory in the Selby and Ainsty by-election, surpassing the Conservatives in the largest swing in vote share since 1994. This win has resulted in 25-year-old Keir Mather becoming the youngest member of the House of Commons. Labour leader, Sir Keir Starmer, interpreted the outcome as a clear demand for change by the voters.

In Somerton and Frome, another traditionally safe Conservative seat, the Liberal Democrats experienced a significant swing of 29 percentage points away from the Conservatives, leading to Sarah Dyke’s appointment as the new Member of Parliament.

Meanwhile, in the Uxbridge constituency, the Conservatives’ Steve Tuckwell narrowly defeated Labour rival Danny Beales by a mere 495 votes. This provided a glimmer of hope for the Tories’ general election campaign. However, the expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (Ulez) poses a challenge for the Conservatives, as its outer borders will extend to other regions next month.

The defeat in Uxbridge was attributed by both Sir Keir and Angela Rayner, the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, to a backlash against the Ulez expansion. They expressed their concerns and Sir Keir mentioned that he would contemplate the message conveyed by the voters.

Despite the criticism from Labour leaders, allies of London Mayor Sadiq Khan confirmed that the Ulez expansion would proceed as planned. Sadiq Khan is facing re-election next year.

Following the by-election results, conservative right-wingers called on Chancellor Rishi Sunak to abandon net zero schemes and revert to traditional Conservative policies. Lord Frost, the former Brexit Secretary, highlighted the unpopularity of green policies when individuals bear direct costs, as evidenced by polling data. He emphasized the need to reassess strategies related to heat pumps and the 2030 deadline for electric cars to prevent potential setbacks for the Conservative Party in the future.
