Business News: Movenpick Mactan Makes a Comeback

After a long break due to the devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and Typhoon “Odette” (internationally known as Rai) that struck Cebu in December 2021, Movenpick Hotel Mactan Island Cebu is reopening today.

During the soft opening, a total of 85 refreshed rooms and suites will be available, with plans to gradually make all rooms available over the next year.

Night owls and party goers will be thrilled to know that the beloved Ibiza, which was severely affected by Typhoon Odette, is scheduled to reopen in time for the Christmas rush this year.

The renovation and refurbishment of Movenpick Hotel Mactan Island Cebu, which temporarily suspended operations on August 31, 2020, is estimated to cost P550 million.

Raising the funds has been a challenge, but the group led by esteemed local business leader Manny Osmeña, who is financing the hotel’s rebirth, is confident that the significant investment will ultimately pay off, especially as the demand for revenge travel remains strong.

Cold Sapporo, Hot Business

The municipality of Murcia in Negros Occidental recently welcomed one of its largest investments to date: the P350-million state-of-the-art Sapporo cold storage facility and ice plant of Czark Mak Corporation (CZM) Group of Companies.

This investment includes funding for solar power, real estate, and planned dry warehouses.

CZM may not be a household name yet, but their businesses span across the country and include real estate, manufacturing, warehousing, logistics, agribusiness, food and hospitality, and technology. They are continuously exploring new business opportunities and expanding their customer reach.

The construction of the cold storage facility is expected to be completed this month, with commercial operations scheduled to start in the third week of July. It will have a capacity of 1,728 pallet positions, consisting of five frozen rooms, two chiller rooms, and two blast freezing rooms.

The facility has received approval from the Board of Investment for non-pioneer status registration. Sapporo offers both cold storage solutions for blasting and freezing, as well as chillers for agricultural products that do not require below-freezing temperatures.

The facility will cater to the needs of agricultural and other producers in Murcia, as well as Bacolod, Bago, Talisay, Silay, Don Salvador Benedicto, and other areas.

CZM currently operates a cold storage facility and ice plant in Guiguinto, Bulacan, through its subsidiary Acro Ice. They also have an ice plant and soon-to-be cold storage facility in Batangas under another subsidiary, The Service Warehouse.

CZM’s chairman and president, Caesar Wongchuking, explained that they have always considered Negros as one of their preferred investment areas for the company’s cold chain portfolio, given the region’s strong presence in agriculture and its identification as a key growth area by the current administration.
