Burt Young, the acclaimed actor known for his portrayal of Paulie Pennino in the “Rocky” franchise, has passed away at the age of 83. Young, who received an Oscar nomination for his role, died on October 8th in Los Angeles according to his daughter, Anne Morea Steingieser. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Throughout his career, Young appeared in numerous successful films and television shows, including “Chinatown,” “Once Upon a Time in America,” and “The Sopranos.” However, it was his role as Paulie, Sylvester Stallone’s on-screen best friend, brother-in-law, and corner-man in the “Rocky” series that brought him the most recognition. With his distinctive appearance and rough-around-the-edges demeanor, Young embodied the character of Paulie, adding depth and humor to the films.

In the original “Rocky” film released in 1976, Paulie is introduced as an angry and abrasive meat packer who mistreats his sister, Adrian (played by Talia Shire). As the sequels progressed, Paulie’s character underwent a transformation, becoming more lighthearted and serving as comedic relief. The chemistry between Young and Stallone was undeniable, contributing to the franchise’s enormous success.

“Rocky” earned Young an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor, along with a total of ten nominations. While Young didn’t win the award, the film won three Oscars, including Best Picture. Stallone took to Instagram to pay tribute to Young, sharing a heartfelt message and a photo of the two on set.

Born and raised in Queens, New York, Young had a diverse background before pursuing acting. He served in the Marine Corps, worked as a professional boxer, and laid carpets before studying under esteemed acting coach Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio. These experiences shaped Young’s portrayal of gritty, blue-collar characters throughout his career.

Young’s talents extended beyond acting; he was also a dedicated painter whose work was showcased in galleries and sold. His wife, Gloria, passed away in 1974, and he is survived by his daughter, grandchild, and brother, Robert.

Burt Young’s legacy will undoubtedly live on through his memorable performances and contributions to the entertainment industry.
