Burning Man Death Investigation Launched Amid Inclement Weather Conditions

More than 70,000 attendees at Burning Man find themselves stranded in Black Rock City, Nev. The festival’s desert campgrounds have turned into sticky mud due to hours of wind and rain.

In a statement on Saturday morning, the Burning Man Project announced that the gate and airport at Black Rock City would remain closed due to heavy rain. Only emergency vehicles are allowed to drive until the playa surface dries up. Participants are advised to conserve resources and seek shelter. Updates on the situation will be provided regularly. As of Sunday morning, the gate remained shut.

Local authorities are investigating a death at the event, which occurred during the rain. Further information is currently unavailable.

On Saturday evening, the entrance to Burning Man was closed by the Bureau of Land Management and a local sheriff’s office, along with nearby roads due to flooding.

Organizers have not given a timeline for when event access will reopen, but the rain is expected to clear on Sunday evening according to weather forecasts.

Burning Man’s gates were initially closed a few days before the official start date to allow the playa to dry. However, scheduled art burns, including the burning of the Man statue, have been postponed due to the weather. The event is scheduled to end on Monday.

Despite the shelter-in-place order, some attendees like Chris Rock and Diplo have attempted to leave.

Diplo tweeted about walking in the mud with Chris Rock before being picked up by a fan. He shared a video revealing shimmery gold face paint beneath his goggles.
