Baker Mayfield spent four seasons with the Cleveland Browns before things unraveled and he was traded to the Carolina Panthers ahead of the 2022 season.
Speaking Friday on the Pat McAfee Show, Mayfield expressed his confusion about how his time with the Browns came to an end.
“I’m still confused too,” Mayfield said. “Towards the end, I played the 2021 season with a shoulder injury and I was looking forward to surgery, recovery, and the opportunity to regain my 2020 form. But that wasn’t part of the plan, and I strongly believe that everything happens for a reason.”

Mayfield was selected by the Browns as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 draft, but he never fully lived up to his potential in Cleveland.
During his four seasons with the Browns, Mayfield struggled with consistency. In 2019, he threw 21 interceptions, just one more than his 22 touchdowns, showing a lack of progress compared to his promising rookie year.
However, in 2020, Mayfield delivered his best season yet, leading the Browns to their first playoff appearance in over a decade. He completed 62.8 percent of his passes for 3,563 yards and 26 touchdowns with only eight interceptions.
In 2021, Mayfield faced further struggles, playing most of the season with a shoulder injury. He completed 60.5 percent of his passes for 3,010 yards and 17 touchdowns, but also threw 13 interceptions in 14 games.
The Browns finished the 2021 season with an 8-9 record, missing the playoffs once again.
Following the 2021 season, Mayfield’s time in Cleveland came to an end. The Browns acquired Deshaun Watson in a trade with the Houston Texans, leading to Mayfield’s trade to the Carolina Panthers.
Mayfield’s stint with the Panthers was short-lived, only appearing in six games before being released. He then joined the Los Angeles Rams for the rest of the 2022 season, describing the experience as a “rollercoaster” during his interview on the Pat McAfee Show.
Mayfield signed a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2023 and has been performing at a high level. He has led the team to a 3-1 record, completing 69.6 percent of his passes for 882 yards, seven touchdowns, and only two interceptions.
In their next game against the Detroit Lions after the bye week on Oct. 15, Mayfield will aim to help the Buccaneers improve to a 4-1 record.
