Hoops enthusiasts at Brooklyn Tower are about to experience a new level of play. The city’s tallest skyscraper is gearing up to unveil a remarkable addition on its 66th floor next year: a basketball court that ranks among the highest in the world, according to a recent report. The luxurious 93-story residential building, standing at over 1,000 feet tall and dominating the Downtown Brooklyn skyline, recently provided a sneak peek of its upcoming Sky Park. This incredible space will not only house two basketball courts but also feature a dog run and a children’s playground, as reported by CNN.
The tower’s developer, JDS Development, proudly shared that at an astounding height of 629 feet, the courts will offer the highest location for hooping in the western hemisphere. The Sky Park will be situated on a floor intentionally designed to be exposed to the wind, reducing the building’s sway. The architecture firm behind the project, SHoP, explained how they took advantage of this open space to create a unique and functional area. Gregg Pasquarelli, founding principal at SHoP, stated, “These wind floors are performative. We maximized their potential.”
This open space will be most frequently utilized during the warmer months, providing an extraordinary outdoor basketball experience. Brooklyn Tower, soaring at 1,066 feet, proudly holds the title of the tallest building in Brooklyn. The tower’s design took inspiration from the iconic Barclays Center, home to the Brooklyn Nets and located just blocks away. Pasquarelli explained that the color scheme and floor design of the tower were influenced by the team’s home arena.
While its dark metallic structure and neo-art deco crown have received criticism for their villainous appearance, they were actually intended to mirror the architectural features of the attached Dime Savings Bank, a designated landmark. Offering breathtaking views of Manhattan, New York Harbor, and the Atlantic Ocean, the tower incorporates materials such as black steel, copper, and expansive windows to truly capture the essence of the borough. Pasquarelli referred to it as “the Empire State Building of Brooklyn.”
JDS Development Group acquired the decommissioned bank in 2016 for $95 million, with plans to redevelop it into a retail space connected to the impressive $750 million tower. SHoP Architects also made headlines for their work on the world’s skinniest skyscraper, located at 111 W. 57th St. Construction on Brooklyn Tower began in 2018, and residents started moving in earlier this year.
Rental prices at the tower start at $3,591 per month for a studio and $4,350 per month for a one-bedroom, factoring in two months of free rent. Condo prices range from $875,000 for a studio to $8 million for a four-bedroom. With unobstructed views of the Manhattan skyline and the vast Atlantic Ocean due to its solitary height, the tower’s residences offer an unparalleled living experience.
