LOS ANGELES — Britney Spears reveals in her upcoming memoir, “The Woman in Me,” that she made the difficult decision to have an abortion while she was dating Justin Timberlake in the late 1990s and early 2000s, according to excerpts exclusively published by People magazine.
In the memoir, Spears, now 41, shares that the unexpected pregnancy was something she had wanted to keep and raise the child, but Timberlake was insistent on the abortion due to their young age and unpreparedness for parenthood.
“I loved Justin so much. I always envisioned a future where we would have a family together,” Spears writes. “However, Justin was opposed to the idea of becoming a father at that time. He believed that we were too young and not ready for such a responsibility.”
The pop star expresses that if it had been solely her decision, she would have chosen to keep the baby despite the challenges. She describes the experience as one of the most difficult and painful moments of her life.
Representatives for Timberlake, now 42, have not yet responded to requests for comment.
Spears and Timberlake, who met as young cast members on “The Mickey Mouse Club,” had a highly publicized relationship for about three years during their late teens and early 20s. Their breakup in 2002 was accompanied by tabloid gossip and speculations about Spears’ virginity. Timberlake even released a track titled “Cry Me a River,” hinting at infidelity in their relationship.
In 2021, following the release of a documentary that shed light on Spears’ mistreatment in the media during their split, Timberlake publicly apologized to her on social media, admitting that he had failed her.
Spears went on to become a mother to two sons, aged 18 and 17, with her second husband, Kevin Federline. They were married for two years.
In April 2022, Spears announced that she and her then-fiancé Sam Asghari were expecting their first child together. Unfortunately, she revealed the following month that she had suffered a miscarriage. Spears and Asghari got married in June 2022 but filed for divorce in August of the following year.
