‘Bringing a Family-Friendly Twist to Summer Festivals: Introducing a Local Alternative to Electric Picnic’

Emerging from the darkness cast by the pandemic, this year promises a plethora of new and exciting festivals across the country, along with the return of some beloved favorites.

Philip Meagher, a music enthusiast and solicitor, had a vision of creating a hassle-free music festival. This month, he will fulfill his dream as Forest Fest takes center stage, with Meagher himself swapping the courtroom for the main stage.

From July 21 to 23, Co Laois will captivate audiences with Forest Fest in Emo, featuring iconic music legends such as Sister Sledge, Suede, and the Proclaimers.

Meagher explained, “A few years ago, while listening to my Spotify hit list filled with bands like The Stunning, Something Happens, and Aslan, I realized I couldn’t relate to other festivals geared towards those over 30.”

“I found them to be a hassle in terms of accessibility, food options, and restroom facilities. I wanted to create a local alternative to Electric Picnic, a more intimate and indie festival, showcasing high-quality bands for a mature audience,” he added.

Forest Fest is also family-friendly, offering dedicated children’s entertainment throughout the festival.

In another part of the country, the Healing Spirit Festival will take place outside Milltown in Co Cavan during the weekend of August 4. This innovative, substance-free festival aims to promote merriment and celebration through music, with notable musicians like Kila, Liam O’Maonlai, The Prodigals, and Bog Bodies taking the stage.

Gearoid Teevan, the festival organizer, once struggled with alcohol addiction. He credits his sobriety to his deep connection with nature and the land. Teevan expressed, “This festival is about reconnecting with nature, enjoying great music, delicious food, and finding relaxation in a safe and family-friendly environment.”

Family-friendly festivals are reclaiming the spotlight this summer, as evidenced by the success of Kaleidoscope Festival and Beyond the Pale Festival, both of which saw people of all ages coming together to celebrate. In the coming months, families can further enjoy festivals like Cruinniú na nÓg, All Together Now, and Indiependence.

Overall, this summer promises a diverse array of festivals, allowing people to embrace the joy of music, nature, and community in unique and unforgettable ways.
