Brentwood Intersection Honored as Republic of Artsakh Square

An intersection in Brentwood was officially designated as Republic of Artsakh Square on Thursday to raise awareness about the Azerbaijan blockade of Artsakh and its consequences.

In May, the City Council made the decision to honor the embattled region by naming the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Granville Avenue as Republic of Artsakh Square, a significant symbol for the Armenian community in Southern California. Notably, Azerbaijan’s consulate in Los Angeles is situated at this intersection.

City Council President Paul Krekorian emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “Azerbaijan’s dictator has explicitly threatened genocide and called for the expulsion of all Armenians from territories he claims, once again threatening the annihilation of the Armenian people in their ancient homeland.”

The Republic of Artsakh, formerly known as the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh, emerged as a democratic state after seceding from the Soviet Union. However, it is geographically surrounded by Azerbaijan and relies on the Lachin Corridor, which is currently being blocked by the armed forces of Azerbaijan, as its sole connection to Armenia and the outside world.

It is important to note that internationally, the Nagorno Karabakh Republic is recognized as part of Azerbaijan, while Armenians refer to it as Artsakh.

Azerbaijan’s Consul General, Ramil Gurbanov, expressed deep concern regarding the decision of the Los Angeles City Council. He deemed the naming of the intersection and the unveiling of street signs as a provocative act that undermines international law, peacebuilding efforts, and diplomatic endeavors in the region.
