Authorities have arrested a former Major League Baseball pitcher in connection with a 2021 shooting incident in northern California that resulted in the death of his father-in-law and the hospitalization of his mother-in-law.
Danny Serafini, a former player for the Minnesota Twins and several other teams, was taken into custody in Winnemucca, Nevada, according to a news release from the Placer County Sheriff’s Office.
Samantha Scott, also involved in the incident, was arrested in Las Vegas.
According to a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, Serafini is related to the victims as he is their son-in-law. Scott also had a connection to the victims, possibly working as their nanny.
Both Serafini and Scott are facing charges of murder and attempted murder. They are currently awaiting extradition to Placer County.
While an attorney for Serafini has yet to be reached, it is unknown if Scott has legal representation.
On June 5, 2021, authorities responded to a call at a home near the North Lake Tahoe area, where they discovered the body of Robert Gary Spohr, 70, with a fatal gunshot wound. Wendy Wood Spohr, 68, was also shot and taken to the hospital. She eventually recovered but passed away a year later.
Surveillance footage from the home showed an unidentified man wearing a hood and face covering, as well as carrying a backpack, prior to the incident.
The sheriff’s office stated that after ongoing investigations, Serafini and Scott were identified as suspects in the case.
