A woman pleads guilty to running over her boyfriend with a car and fleeing the scene as a neighbor in Orange comes to the victim’s rescue using a jack to free him from under the vehicle.
According to police, the incident occurred on December 17, 2020, when the victim was riding a bicycle away from Diana Rodriguez’s home. Rodriguez ran over him with her car, causing the vehicle to go up on the sidewalk and become stuck on a curb. Thankfully, this prevented the car from crushing the victim, but he was trapped underneath it, as explained by Sgt. Phil McMullin of the Orange Police Department.
Fortunately, a neighbor heard the man’s cries for help and quickly came to his aid. Using a jack, the neighbor was able to free the victim before paramedics arrived to transport him to the hospital, according to McMullin.
The victim suffered a scorched thigh from contact with a hot vehicle part. However, McMullin emphasized that he was “very fortunate” not to have sustained more serious injuries.
After the incident, Rodriguez fled the scene but was apprehended shortly afterward, stated McMullin.
In court, Rodriguez, aged 29 and from Orange, pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon and corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant, both of which are felonies. She also admitted to causing great bodily injury in a domestic violence incident, leading to sentencing enhancements. In exchange for her plea, a felony count of mayhem and three misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled substance were dismissed.
Sentencing has been scheduled for October 20.
