The search for fugitive murderer Danelo Cavalcante in Pennsylvania concluded on Wednesday morning, as Chester County authorities announced his capture in a live radio call at 8:18am. “I’m delighted to report that the suspect is now in custody. Reiterating, the suspect is in custody,” declared an official. During a morning press conference, Lieutenant Colonel George Bivens from the Pennsylvania State Police shared further details about the arrest. He revealed that a thermal heat technology-equipped aircraft detected a heat signal around 1am and tracked it until it had to retreat due to lightning. Ground tactical teams then secured the area until the aircraft could resume tracking.
According to a report by NBC News, tactical teams closed in on the source of the heat in a wooded area west of PA 100 just after 8am. “Cavalcante was unaware of the encirclement until this point,” stated Bivens. “He then proceeded to crawl through dense underbrush, clutching his rifle.” However, his attempt at escape was foiled by a dog from the Border Patrol Tactical Unit present at the scene. “I believe the canine played a significant role in preventing him from using the firearm,” Bivens added, as reported by PennLive.
“He resisted, but was eventually apprehended, and no injuries were sustained,” shared Bivens, as NBC reported. While Cavalcante did sustain a minor dog bite on his scalp, no shots were fired. The attorney general’s office confirmed that Cavalcante will face charges for felony escape. The 34-year-old was serving a life sentence when he managed to escape from Chester County Prison in Pocopson Township by scaling two parallel walls to reach the roof. The prison tower guard on duty at the time has been terminated from his position. As an 18-year veteran, it was discovered that he violated prison rules by having a cellphone in the tower. (His mother had given an interview just before his capture.)
